Around the beginning of the 21st century, American multinational enterprises like General Electric, decided to offshore their manufacturing process abroad to expand their business and to cut costs. Nowadays, a lot of these companies are doing precisely the opposite: they are re-shoring their current manufacturing process back to the country of origin. Through literature research, this thesis investigates the existing switch in the strategy of the American companies. It aims to find out the reason why American companies follow the trend of re-shoring and how this trend will develop in the future. The case of General Electric will be used as an example throughout this thesis.
